Pros:
First and fourth ingredients are named meat products.
Cons:
Use of low quality grains and other controversial filler.
The first, fourth and eighth ingredients in this food are named meat products, all in meal form. This gives us a reasonable level of confidence that this food contains an adequate amount of meat for a canine.
The primary grain in the food, the second ingredient, is Corn. Corn is a problematic grain that is difficult for dogs to digest and thought to be the cause of a great many allergy and yeast infection problems. There is further corn product fifth on the ingredient list, raising suspicion that this may be the true first ingredient in the food (see note about “splitting” on the main page). Rice is the third ingredient, and is a decent quality grain.
Beet pulp is filler and a controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.
Wheat germ is a grain fragment and we consider this to be more filler. The use of wheat is a significant negative however: wheat is believed to be the number one cause of allergy problems in dog food.
We would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than dried egg product in the food. Likewise, the use of fresh peas and carrots rather than dried.
Overall, we are reasonably satisfied with the amount of meat product in the food. It is the use of low quality and problematic grains and other fillers that contribute to the low rating given to this product. We would not recommend feeding it to dogs that suffer allergies and itchy skin.
Note that this food uses citric acid as a preservative and should not be premoistened prior to feeding (a bloat risk factor for large breed dogs).
