Inadequate meat content, by-products, use of low quality grains and filler, carcinogenic chemical preservatives.

The main ingredient in this food is corn. Corn is a difficult to digest grain, which limits its nutritional value for dogs. We consider this to be a low quality ingredient. It is also commonly associated with allergy and skin problems. We prefer not to see these grains used in dog food. Corn appears on the ingredient list as corn gluten meal. This is the "dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm". In plain English, that which remains after all the nutritious bits have been removed.
This food uses by-products. Chicken by-product meal - a very low quality ingredient. This is defined as "consisting of the ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice". There is a further meat product, fish meal, 8th on the ingredient list but this is too far down to make a substantive contribution to the meat content of the food. We find no sign of any guarantee from the manufacturer that this ingredient is free of ethoxyquin (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative banned from use in human food due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).
It is a concern to see fat as the third ingredient. Research at Purdue University has identified fat in the top four ingredients of dry food as a factor that increases the risk of bloat in large breed dogs.
Brewers rice is a low quality grain and by-product. We prefer not to see the use of any form of soy in dog food as this is an ingredient of low quality and commonly causing allergy problems. Soybean meal, the ground remains of soybeans after extraction of oil, provides additional low quality protein to the food. Soybean Mill Run is the ground hulls (outer shell) of soybeans after the useful bean meat and oil has been extracted.
Grape and tomato pomace are fibre/filler, as is citrus pulp. We appreciate the inclusion of a small amount of vegetable matter in the food, but would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than egg product.
We note also the use of chemical preservatives - BHA and BHT. These chemicals are banned or heavily regulated in use in human food due to being carcinogenic.
