The first ingredient in the food is brown rice. This is a decent quality grain, but it is still a grain. The first ingredient in any dog food should be meat.
The second, third and fourth ingredients are all named meat products. The first of these is chicken inclusive of water content. Once this is removed, as it must be to create a dry food, the ingredient will end up weighing around 20% of its wet weight, and would be more accurately placed much further down the ingredient list. Since it is followed by two meat ingredients in meal form, our confidence in the level of meat content in the food is unaffected. A third meat meal ingredient, chicken meal, is 10th on the ingredient list, but this begines to get too far down to make any substantive contribution to the overall meat content of the food.
There is a further meat ingredient - fish meal - 14th on the ingredient list. This is also too far down to make any substantive contribution to the meat content of the food. We do not find any guarantee on the manufacturer website that this ingredient isfree of ethoxyquin (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish ingredients, and that is banned from use in human food because it is believed to be carcinogenic).
Further grains include oatmeal and barley, both of which are good quality. We appreciate the range of vegetables in the food.
Overall, this food looks to be an improvement on its previous version, especially in the area of meat content. However, our confidence in the meat content of the food is still not high enough to award the 4-star rating other formulas in this range achieve.
