Pros:
First and second ingredients are named meat products, good quality ingredients.
Cons:
Uncertain meat content.
The first two ingredients of this food are named meat products. The second of these is meat inclusive of its water content (about 80%) and once that is removed it is likely that this ingredient would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list (ingredients are listed in order of weight). Note that this is an example of the practice of “splitting” (see note on main page), but since it is followed by a meat meal form, in this case our confidence in the amount of meat in the food is unaffected. There is a further meat meal ingredient (salmon) 9th on the ingredient list, but this is too far down to make up a substantial portion of the food.
The next two ingredients are both rice. Rice, in whole form, is a high quality source of carbohydrates and additional protein. However, this is also an example of splitting and it is possible that the combined rice ingredients outweigh the combined dry-weight meat products in the food.
Barley is the next grain and is also of good quality. Sunflower oil is a good source of linoleic acid. Potatoes are a good source of carbohydrate and B vitamins. Rice bran is a grain fragment and filler. We appreciate the use of whole fruits and vegetables in the food.
We note that the manufacturer warrents the use of 42% meat content in this food. It is uncertain, however, whether this refers to the dry or wet weight ingredients.
