The first two ingredients of this food are both named meat products. The first is salmon, inclusive of water content. Once this is removed, as it must be to create a dry food, the ingredient will end up weighing around 20% of its wet weight. It is thus unlikely that this is the true first ingredient in the food, but would be more accurately placed further down the ingredient list. This is not a major concern, since the second and fourth ingredients are both meat products in meal form.
We are unable to find any guarantee on the manufacturer site that the fish products used in this food are free of ethoxyquin (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish products and which is banned from use in human foods due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).
The food contains several grains - four ahead of the fat content. This serves to limit our confidence in the overall meat content of the food. The grains used are of mixed quality. Barley, whole oats and brown rice are decent quality, but brewers rice is a waste product.
Cellulose powder is filler - otherwise known as sawdust. Beet pulp is another low quality ingredient and filler. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required. We note that this product includes synthetic vitamin K, a substance linked to liver problems and that is progressively being removed from better quality dog food products.
This food has been rated 3* primarily on its meat content, however the other ingredients are not of high quality and a 2* rating was strongly considered.
