Pros:
First and fourth ingredients are named meat products.
Cons:
Use of low quality grains and other controversial filler.
The first and fourth ingredients of this food are both named meat products in meal form.
The food contains several grains - three ahead of the fat content. This serves to limit our confidence in the overall meat content of the food. The grains used are low quality. Brewers rice is a waste product and corn is a difficult to digest grain commonly associated with allergies and skin problems. Wheat shorts are further waste product and wheat in any form is something we prefer not to see used in dog food due to the high number of allergies that result.
Beet pulp is another low quality ingredient and filler. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required. We note that this product includes synthetic vitamin K, a substance linked to liver problems and that is progressively being removed from better quality dog food products.
Overall, the non-meat ingredients used in this food appear to be almost universally of low quality. It is on the basis of reasonable meat content that this food gains a 3-star rating, though 2* was strongly considered and may yet be more appropriate. We would not suggest its use for dogs who suffer allergies and ear infections.
