The overwhelming majority of this food is comprised of grains. Rice is a decent quality grain, but the use of maize (corn) and wheat are less desirable. Corn is a cheap grain that is difficult to digest and commonly associated with food allergies. Wheat is believed by many to be the leading cause of food allergies in dogs. Even if these had all been good quality grains, we would still note that grains are not a natural foodstuff for canines, who should be fed products based on meat, not grain.
The primary protein source in the food is soya. Soy is a further substance commonly linked to food allergies, and is a low quality protein source compared to meat. The sole meat ingredient in the food is fish (we don't care about nationality). This is not a meal ingredient, but is inclusive of water content (about 80%). Once that is removed, as it must be to create a dehydrated product, the ingredient will weigh around 20% of its wet weight. Ingredients are listed in order of weight, and the dehydrated ingredient would probably be more accurately placed much further down the ingredient list. It is highly unlikely that this ingredient provides the food with any significant meat content. We find no sign on the manufacturer's website of a guarantee that only ethoxyquin-free protein ingredients are used in this food (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative, commonly added to fish ingredients, and that is banned or heavily regulated in human food due to the belief that it is carcinogenic). There is a small amount of vegetable matter in the food.
This product has a sprayed on coating of digest material to make it palatable. Digest is material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed tissue. Digest is a low quality ingredient that, in this product, is unidentifiable by species or source.
The food has added vitamins and minerals, but no information about these is given and it may contain synthetics. Likewise, there is no information given about preservatives which may include chemicals such as ethoxyquin, BHT and BHA all of which are allowed in pet products but are banned or heavily regulated in human food due to the belief that they are carcinogenic.
