The first ingredient in the food is a named meat product in meal form. There is a second meat meal ingredient 7th on the ingredient list, but this is not named by species and hence is unidentifiable source and quality. Unidentifiable ingredients are usually very low quality.
The next three ingredients are all grains. Barley, rice and oatmeal are decent quality grains, but it is likely that the combined grain products outweigh the meat content of the food by a substantial margin. Potatoes are are good quality starch and carbohydrate source, but combined with so many grains make this food look very light in meat content.
Beet pulp is a low quality ingredient and filler. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required. The inclusion of corn is not desirable - corn is a difficult to digest grain that has little nutritional value for a canine, and is commonly associated with allegies and yeast infections.
Overall, this product appears to contain minimal meat. It has been awarded a 3-star rating due to the predominant quality of the grains used in the food (no fragments) but the low meat content and use of unidentifiable source meat products is a concern.
