Pros:
First ingredient is a named meat product
Cons:
Insufficient meat content, mixed quality ingredients
The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product. It is chicken, inclusive of water content (about 80%). Once that is removed, as it must be to create a dehydrated product, the ingredient will weigh around 20% of its wet weight. Ingredients are listed in order of weight, and the dehydrated ingredient would probably be more accurately placed much further down the ingredient list, unlikely to make a significant contribution to the overall meat content of the food. We appreciate this being an organic ingredient, but that is not a substitute for adequate quantity. There are two further meat ingredients, this time in meal form, 5th and 7th on the ingredient list. These are too far down to lift the meat content of the food to a satisfactory level. We note also the inclusion of a fish meal in the food, but find no sign on the manufacturer website of a guarantee that they use only ethoxyquin-free protein sources in the product (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish ingredients, but which is banned or heavily regulated in human food due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).
The main grains in the food are organic rice and corn. Rice is a decent quality grain and carbohydrate source, but corn is a difficult to digest grain that is a common cause of allergy problems. Barley is a further good quality grain. With three grains ahead of the first true meat ingredient and the fat content, this food appears to be rather grain-heavy, whereas food for canines should be based on meat. We appreciate the use of whole eggs in the food.
Overall, this product appears very light in meat content (we would suggest adding meat if this procudt is used). The remaining ingredients are rather mixed in quality, with some good quality grains and organics, but also some less desirable inclusions.
