Pros: First two ingredients are named meat products
Cons: Insufficient meat content, fat of unidentifiable origin

The first two ingredients in this food are named meat products. The first is chicken, inclusive of water content (about 80%). Once that is removed, as it must be to create a dehydrated product, the ingredient will weigh around 20% of its wet weight. Ingredients are listed in order of weight, and the dehydrated ingredient would probably be more accurately placed much further down the ingredient list. The second is in meal form, and the true first ingredient in the food. These are the only meat ingredients in the food.

The 3rd-5th ingredients are all grain products, which suggests a food heavy in grains and light in meat content. Rice, oats and barley are all good quality grains, but combined would outweigh the meat content by a substantial margin. We appreciate the use of organics, and this is better than many organic products, but first and foremost a dog food should be based on meat.

Poultry fat is a low quality ingredient rarely found in anything but very low quality foods. Poultry fat is an ingredient of unidentified origin for which it is impossible to determine source or quality. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this as obtained from the tissues of poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative"

We appreciate the inclusion of a small range of fruits/vegetables in the food, and a range of probiotics. The food contains an amount of glucosamine and chondroitin, but not in useful doses and, like most dog foods, we consider this something of a gimmick.
