Pros:
First and fourth ingredients are named meat products
Cons:
Minimum acceptable meat content, some controversial filler
The first, fourth and eighth ingredients in this food are named meat products, each in meal form. The last is too far down the ingredient list to make a substantial contribution to the overall meat content of the food.
The second and third ingredients are both forms of rice. If these were not 'split' it is likely that rice would, in fact, be revealed as the primary ingredient in the food. Rice ais a decent quality grain and good carbohydrate source, however canines should be fed diets based on meat rather than grains. Oatmeal is a further grain, 6th on the ingredient list.
Beet pulp is filler and a controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required. We would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than dried egg product in the food.
The food does contain a range of fruits/vegetables and a good range of probiotics.
Overall, we are reasonably satisfied with the quality of this product, but would prefer to see more meat in the food. Supplementing the diet with additional meat should be considered by those using the food.
