Pros: First and fourth ingredients are named meat products
Cons: Minimum acceptable meat content, some low quality ingredients

The first and fourth ingredients in this food are named meat products, both in meal form. There is a further meat meal ingredient 9th on the ingredient list, but this is too far down to make any substantial contribution to the overall meat content of the food. We note that the food contains a fish meal ingredient, but do not find any statement on the manufacturers website guaranteeing the use of ethoxyquin-free ingredients (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish ingredients and which is banned or heavily regulated in human food production, due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).

The second and third ingredients are grains. Barley and oats are decent quality grains and good carbohydrate sources. The fat content of the food comes from poultry oil. Poultry "oil" is likely to be the same as poultry fat, a low quality ingredient rarely found in anything but very low quality foods. Poultry fat is an ingredient of unidentified origin for which it is impossible to determine source or quality. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this as obtained from the tissues of poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative". We note the inclusion of a small range of fruits/vegetables.

Overall, this food has been rated 4* but with some caution regarding the quality of ingredients. It is close to a 3* rating.
