Pros: Three of top five ingredients are named meat products, grainless, high meat content
Cons: Some low grade ingredients

The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product in meal form. It is followed by a chicken, but this is meat inclusive of its water content (about 80%) which when removed will leave the ingredient weighing around 20% of its wet weight. It is thus unlikely that this is truely the second ingredient in the food, but would be more accurately place further down the ingredient list. There is a further meat meal ingredient fifth on the ingredient list, and with a supportive macronutrient breakdown we have a reasonable level of confidence in the meat content of the food.

The third ingredient is chicken fat. This is something of a concern as research at Purdue University has shown fat in the top four ingredients of dry foods to be a factor increasing the risk of bloat in large breed dogs. Smaller breeds are untested.

The fourth ingredient is potato product, representing a downgrade in quality from the original version of this food (see archives). Potato 'product' is a low quality ingredient, being potato culls, peelings and other byproducts of potato processing for the human food industry. This is a significant ingredient in the food (third on the ingredient list, but likely to be the second 'true' ingredient in the food).

In minor ingredients, the food contains a range of fruits/vegetables and a good range of probiotics. We would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than egg product in the food.

The food is entirely grainless, which we consider to be a particular positive. Grains are not a natural food for canines and we appreciate the appearance of more natural foodstuffs in commercial dog food.

Despite this, the obvious downgrading of some ingredients, including some comprising a significant proportion of the food is the reason that the food has been rated with 5*, down from the 6* that the original version enjoyed.
