Insufficient meat content, meat and fat of unidentifiable origen, controversial filler

The first ingredient in this food is a meat product of unidentifiable origin. It is in meal form. We prefer not to see the use of unidentified "poultry" or "meat" products in dog foods. These are almost always very low quality, and it is impossible to identify species or source. The fat ingredient, fourth on the ingredient list, is also of unidentifiable species and source and similarly a very low quality ingredient.
The main grains in the food are wheat and corn. Wheat is believed by many to be the number one cause of food allergy problems in dogs. As wheat shorts this consists of "fine particles of wheat bran, wheat germ, wheat flour, and the offal from the “tail of the mill”. This product must be obtained in the usual process of commercial milling and must contain not more than 7% crude fiber". In simpler terms, the floor sweepings from processing of wheat for flour and other products. Wheat flour (in dog food commonly a byproduct of human food production) is a further grain fragment we consider primarily filler. Corn is of limited value, being a difficult to digest grain that is also commonly implicated in food allergies. It is, at least, a whole grain.
Beet pulp is controversial filler which appears to be used in large quantities in this food. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required. Added glucosamine and chondroitin are far below useful levels and a gimmick (as is the case in all dog food products).
