Insufficient meat content, byproducts, meat and fat of unidentifiable origin, low quality grain
The main ingredients in this food are grains. Wheat is believed by many to be the leading cause of food allergies in dog food. In wheatbran form, this is a grain fragment we consider primarily filler. Maize (corn) is a difficult to digest grain of limited value, and which is also commonly associated with food allergies in dogs. Even if the food were based on good quality grain, we would still note that grains are an unnatural foodstuff for canines. Dog foods should be based on meat. Soya beans are a source of protein, but this is low quality protein compared to meat.
The meat content of this food is byproducts. These are only partially disclosed by species. It is impossible to ascertain the quality of by-products and these are usually products that are of such low quality as to be rejected for use in the human food chain, or else are those parts that have so little value that they cannot be used elsewhere in either the human or pet food industries. Chicken by-products are the non-rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered poultry, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, except in such amounts as might occur unavoidable in good processing practice. "Meat" by-products are "the non rendered, clean parts, other than meat, derived from slaughtered mammals. It includes, but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, partially defatted low-temperature fatty tissue and stomachs and intestines freed of their contents. It does not include hair, horns, teeth and hooves." Note that this definition excludes actual meat. Note also that this ingredient is not fully identified by species and may vary. Ingredients of unidentifiable species and source are usually very low quality. Being organic does not compensate for quality.
The fat content of the food is undisclosed and, as the meat ingredient above, is likely to be of very low quality. The food has added minerals, but no information about these is given and it may contain synthetics. Likewise, the preservative is undisclosed and may be chemical preservatives such as ethoxyquin, BHT and BHA which are allowed in pet products but are banned or heavily regulated in human food due to the belief that they are carcinogenic.
