Pros:
Second ingredient is a named meat product
Cons:
Insufficient meat content, mixed quality grains, undisclosed preservative
The main ingredients in this food are grains. Maize (corn) is a difficult to digest grain of limited value in dog food. It is commonly associated with food allergies. Rice is a good quality grain, but it is still a grain and this is an unnatural foodstuff for canines. Dog foods should be based on meat.
The sole meat ingredient is a named meat product in meal form. Only the second ingredient and 14% of the food, this is insufficient. Users of this food might consider adding meat to the diet.
We note that chicken oil (fat) is the fourth ingredient and that research at Purdue University has identified fat in the top four ingredients of dry food as a factor increasing the risk of bloat in large breed dogs. Smaller breeds are untested. We appreciate the use of whole eggs in the food.
The food has added vitamins and minerals, but no information about these is given and it may contain synthetics. Likewise, the preservative is undisclosed and may be chemical preservatives such as ethoxyquin, BHT and BHA which are allowed in pet products but are banned or heavily regulated in human food due to the belief that they are carcinogenic.
Overall, the food appears better than many in this class and a 3* rating was considered. However, the non-disclosure of preservatives combined with its low meat content result in the lower 2* rating.
