Pros: Second and fourth ingredients are named meat products.
Cons: Insufficient meat content, use of fillers.

The primary ingredient in this food is rice. Rice is a decent quality grain, but we believe that dog food should be based on meat, not on grains. It is not necessary to reduce the content of the most nutritious ingredient for a senior dog.

The first named meat product is the second ingredient in the food, and there is a further meat ingredient fourth. The latter is chicken inclusive of its water content (about 80%) and once that is removed it is likely that this ingredient would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list (ingredients are listed in order of weight).

There are further meat ingredients at 9th, 10th and 15th respectively, but these are too far down the ingredient list to make up a substantive portion of the food. We note that one of these ingredients is fish meal, which the manufacturer does not state to be from ethoxyquin-free source (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish destined for meal, and is believed to be carcinogenic. It is not approved for human use).

Oatmeal is the third ingredient, and is decent quality. Potato protein and tomato pomace we consider to be filler. We could prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than dried egg product in the food. The inclusion of some amount of fruit/vegetables is appreciated. The food contains a range of probiotics.

The low meat content and use of filler contribute to the low rating given to this product.
