Pros: First and third ingredients are named meat products, generally good quality ingredients
Cons: Insufficient meat content

The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product, in meal form. The 3rd ingredient is also a meat product, but not a meat meal, being inclusive of water content (about 80%). Once this is removed, as it must be to create a dehydrated product, the ingredient will weigh around 20% of its wet weight. As ingredients are listed in order of weight, it is thus unlikely that this ingredient is truely the 3rd most prolific in the food and would be more accurately placed further down the ingredient list. There is a further meat meal ingredient 9th on the ingredient list. We note that this is a fish meal, but this is too far down to make any substantial contribution to the overall meat content of the food. We find no guarantee on the manufacturer website that all protein ingredients purchases are free of ethoxyquin (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative, commonly added to fish meal ingredients, but which is banned or heavily regulated in human food production due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).

The grains in this product are primarily good quality. With three grain ingredients and only one true meat product in the top four ingredients though, it is likely that the combined grains outweigh the meat content of the food by some margin. In minor ingredients, potatoes add to the carbohydrate and protein content of the food.

The food does contain some amount of fruit and vegetable matter, and we appreciate the inclusion of whole egg. Glucosamine and chondroitin, although specified on the ingredient list are not present in useful quantities for any therapudic purpose (as is the case for all dog food products) and we consider highlighting these to be a gimmick. We note the presence of synthetic vitamin K - a substance alleged by some to be linked to liver problems and which is progressively being removed from better quality products.

Overall, the ingredients used in this product appear to be of generally good quality. Meat content is unlikely to be as high as it may first appear, however, and users may consider supplementing this diet with meat.
