Pros: First ingredient is a named meat product
Cons: Insufficient meat content, controversial filler

The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product, in meal form. We note that this is a fish meal, but find no guarantee on the manufacturer website that all protein ingredients purchases are free of ethoxyquin (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative, commonly added to fish meal ingredients, but which is banned or heavily regulated in human food production due to the belief that it is carcinogenic). This is the sole meat ingredient in the food.

Potatoes are the second ingredient and a good source of carbohydrates, b-vitamins and additional protein. Oats are a good quality grain. Canolda oil, whilst a single source oil, is not agreed by all to be of good quality.

Beet pulp is a controversial filler. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.

Glucosamine and chondroitin, although specified on the ingredient list are not present in useful quantities for any therapudic purpose (as is the case for all dog food products) and we consider highlighting these to be a gimmick. We note the presence of synthetic vitamin K - a substance alleged by some to be linked to liver problems and which is progressively being removed from better quality products.

Overall, the main concern with this product is the minimal apparent meat content. The major ingredients used are of good quality, but amongst the minor ingredients are some more controversial products that we would prefer not to see included.
