Pros:
First and fifth ingredients are named meat products
Cons:
Minimum acceptable meat content, mixed quality grains, controversial filler
The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product, in meal form. There is a second meat meal 5th on the ingredient list. We note that this is a fish meal, but find no guarantee on the manufacturer website that all protein ingredients purchases are free of ethoxyquin (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative, commonly added to fish meal ingredients, but which is banned or heavily regulated in human food production due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).
The grains in the product are of mixed quality. Corn is the primary grain, but is not an easily digested grain and is of limited value in dog food. It is also commonly associated with food allergies. Rice is generally good quality.
Beet pulp is a controversial filler. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.
We appreciate the use of whole eggs in the product. Vitamins and minerals are added, but no information is given about these and may include synthetics.
