The first ingredient in this food is a named meat ingredient, in meal form. There is a further meat ingredient 8th on the ingredient list, but this is too far down to constitute a significant portion of the food. We note also that the second and third ingredients are both rice, and combined probably constitute the true first ingredient in the food (see explanation of “splitting” on main page). These and the remaining ingredients in the food are all of good quality, but it appears to be a more grain heavy food than the original Canidae formula, and not quite up to the same standard.
It is a concern to see chicken fat as the fourth (third) ingredient. Research at Purdue University has identified a fat in the top four ingredients of a dry dog food as a factor that increases the risk of bloat in large breed dogs. Smaller breeds are untested.
