Pros:
First two ingredients are named meat products
Cons:
Insufficient meat content, fat of unidentifiable source, low quality ingredients, controversial filler
The first ingredient in the food is a named meat product. This is not a meal ingredient. It is inclusive of water content (about 80%). Once that is removed, as it must be to create a dehydrated product, the ingredient will weigh around 20% of its wet weight. Ingredients are listed in order of weight and, once dehydrated, the ingredient would probably be more accurately placed much further down the ingredient list. There is a second named meat product, this time already in dry (meal) form, which is most likely the major meat ingredient in the food. There are no further meat products.
The major grains in this food are brewers rice (a low quality grain and waste product) and corn meal. Corn is a difficult to digest grain that has limited value in dog food products. Corn is also present as gluten meal. The AAFCO definition of corn gluten meal is “the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm.” In plain English, that which remains after all the nutritious bits have been removed. Soybean meal boosts the protein content of this food, but this is low quality protein compared to meat. Soy products are often a cause of allergy problems for dogs. "Animal" fat is a further very low quality ingredient, unidentifiable by source or species. We would avoid the purchase of any product containing such low quality ingredients.
Beet pulp is controversial filler. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.
We note the inclusion of synthetic vitamin K, which is alleged by some to cause liver problems and which has been removed from better quality dog food products.
Overall, this appears to be a very low quality dog food, with minimal meat content and many low grade ingredients. There is no risk that it will be awarded a better than 2* rating.
