Pros:
|
First two ingredients are named meat products.
|
Cons:
|
Minimum acceptable meat content, mixed quality grains, some filler.

|
The first two ingredients are named meat products. The first is salmon inclusive of its water content (about 80%) and once that is removed it is likely that this ingredient would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list (ingredients are listed in order of weight). Note that this is an example of the practice of “splitting” (see note on main page), but since it is followed by the meal form, in this case serves to increase our level of confidence in the amount of meat product in the food since the split ingredients still rank ahead of the first grain by weight.
We note that the manufacturer makes no claim to use Ethoxyquin-free fish ingredients in this food. Ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative, banned or heavily regulated in use in the human food chain, and believed to be carcinogenic.*
Potatoes are the next primary ingredient and provide B vitamins, carbohydrates and other minerals. The main grains are barley and rice, both of which are good quality sources of carbohydrates, protein and fibre. Canola oil is a good source of linoleic acid.
Brewers rice is a low quality grain and by-product.
We appreciate the inclusion of some vegetables in the food, but would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than egg product.
* We understand that the manufacturer has stated in emails to consumers that the fish ingredient in this food IS preserved with Ethoxyquin.
