The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product, in meal form. This is the sole meat product in the food.
The main grain, and likely the main ingredient (as it appears in 3 forms) is rice. As a whole grain, rice is good quality but rice flour and rice bran are grain fragments that we consider to be filler. We note that fat is the fourth ingredient in the food, and that Purdue University has identified fat in the top four ingredients of dry dog food as a factor increasing the risk of bloat in large breed dogs.
Beet pulp is further filler and a controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food.
The food contains a decent range of probiotics. We would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than egg product in the food. We also note the inclusion of synthetic vitamin K, which is alleged by some to cause liver problems and is a substance that has been removed from better quality products.
