Pros: First and fourth ingredients are named meat products
Cons: Insufficient meat content

The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product. This is not a meal, but rather inclusive of water content. Once that is removed, as it must be to create a dehydrated product, the ingredient will weigh only around 20% of its wet weight. It is thus questionable that this is the true first ingredient in the food (ingredients are listed in order of weight) and might be more accurately placed much further down the ingredient list. There is a further meat (fish) ingredient fourth on the ingredient list, which is in meal form and is likely to in fact be the major meat ingredient in the food. This is a fish meal, but we find no sign of a guarantee on packaging or the manufacturer website that this ingredient has been purchased free of ethoxyquin (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to ocean fish products destined for meal, but that is banned or heavily regulated in human food products due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).

The second & third ingredients (probably the true first & second ingredients) are grains. rice and barley are good quality grains, but nonetheless grains, and should not be the primary ingredient in a food designed for canines. The remaining major grain ingredients is oats which is also decent quality, but adds further to the grain content of the food. Fat content is provided by oil rather than animal fat, which is generally a good thing but not all commentators agree that canola is good quality.

The food contains fruits and vegetables in very small amounts (less than the amount of salt or vit E supplement, for example).

Overall, this product appears to use generally good quality ingredients, but we are not convinced that the meat content is adequate. Users might consider supplementing this diet with real meat.
