Pros: First and fourth ingredients are named meat products.
Cons: Use of low quality grains, and other controversial filler.

The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product. However, it is lamb inclusive of its water content (about 80%) and once that is removed it is likely that this ingredient would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list (ingredients are listed in order of weight). There is a further meat (meal) at 4th on the ingredient list, but the food is primarily grain.

Brewers rice is the main grain in the food and is a low quality grain and by-product. Brown rice, the third ingredient, is a decent quality grain.

We note that chicken fat is the fifth ingredient. But when the two forms of chicken are “un-split”, fat is the fourth ingredient. Research at Purdue University has identified a fat in the top four ingredients of a dry dog food as a factor that increases the risk of bloat in large breed dogs. Smaller breeds are untested.

We note the use of soy isolate and soya oil in the food. Soy is a poor quality source of protein in dog food, and a common cause of allergy problems. Some believe that it is the number 1 cause of food allergies in dogs (outstripping even wheat).

Cellulose is filler. It is “purified, mechanically disintegrated cellulose prepared by processing alpha cellulose obtained as a pulp from fibrous plant materials”: otherwise known as sawdust.

Beet pulp is another filler and a controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food especially so high on the ingredient list. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.
