Pros: First and third ingredients are named meat products.
Cons: Extensive use of cheap grains and other controversial fillers.

The first and third ingredients in this food are named meat products.

The main grain in the food is Brewers rice. Brewers rice is a low quality grain and by-product.

Corn is the fourth ingredient in the food and a problematic one for dogs being difficult to digest and the cause of a great many allergy and yeast infection problems. Beet pulp is yet another controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food especially so high on the ingredient list. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.

Cellulose powder is “purified, mechanically disintegrated cellulose prepared by processing alpha cellulose obtained as a pulp from fibrous plant materials”: otherwise known as sawdust.

Overall, there is a greater amount of named meat product in this food than many in this class. Whilst we appreciate that, this food receives a low rating because of its use of low quality and problematic grains and fillers. We would not recommend use of this product, especially for dogs that suffer allergy or yeast infections.
