The primary ingredient, making up a whopping 59% of this food, is maize (corn). Dog foods should be based on meat, not on grains. Maize is a problematic ingredient in dog food, difficult to digest and the cause of many allergy problems. We prefer not to see it used in dog food at all, let alone as the major portion of the food.
The second ingredient is a low quality meat product. It is a meal made from the carcasses of a variety of fowl, but the origin is unidentifiable. If origin cannot be determined, then neither can quality. The same complaint is made about the ingredient poultry fat. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this as "obtained from the tissues of poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative"
Soy is a poor quality source of protein in dog food, and a common cause of allergy problems. Some believe that it is the number 1 cause of food allergies in dogs (outstripping even wheat).
This food receives a 1 star rating simply because there is nothing lower.
The food is almost entirely made up of low quality grain.
