Pros:

First two ingredients are named meat products.

Cons:
|
Use of controversial filler.

|
The first two ingredients in the food are named meat products. Since the first is lamb inclusive of its water content (about 80%) it is likely that once that is removed this ingredient would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list (ingredients are listed in order of weight). This does not cause a high level of concern, since the second ingredient is also a named meat product, this time in meal form. There is a further meat meal ingredient (fish) 9th on the ingredient list, but this is too far down to make up a substantive portion of the food.
Brown rice is the third ingredient, and a decent quality grain. Rice is also the fourth ingredient, making this appear a fairly grain-heavy food.
Rice bran is further rice and a grain fragment and filler. Beet pulp is further filler and a controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required. Tomato pomace is filler.
We appreciate the inclusion of some amount of vegetable matter in the food, and a good range of probiotics. We would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than egg product in this food.
We note that this food uses citric acid as a preservative and thus should not be premoistened prior to feeding.
