Pros:
Two named meat products in the top five ingredients.
Cons:
Use of wheat and fillers, fat of unidentified origin.
There are two named meat products in the first five ingredients. We would have reasonable confidence that this product contains an adequate amount of meat. There is a further meat ingredient 10th on the ingredient list (fish meal). However the manufacturer does not claim to use ethoxyquin-free sources (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative added to fish meal, and is believed to be carcinogenic).
The second ingredient (wheat flour) is low quality filler and whole wheat is also used. The use of wheat is a significant negative however: wheat is believed to be the number one cause of allergy problems in dog food. Ground rice is a decent quality grain.
Poultry fat is an ingredient of unidentified origin for which it is impossible to determine source or quality. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this as obtained from the tissues of poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative".
We note the use of whole eggs.
We believe that there is an adequate amount of meat product in this food. We are less happy with the use of wheat and fat of unidentified origin and the use of these low quality ingredients brought this food close to a two-star rating.
