The first two ingredients are named meat products. The first is chicken inclusive of its water content (about 80%) and once that is removed it is likely that this ingredient would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list (ingredients are listed in order of weight). Since the next ingredient is chicken meal, however, we can still be confident that the first ingredient in the food really is a meat product. Note also that this is an example of the practice of “splitting” (see note on main page), but in this case serves to increase our level of confidence in the amount of meat product in the food.
The next three ingredients are all grains. We appreciate that these are all whole grains, and therefore inclusive of their nutritional content. However, we also note that one of these grains is corn. Corn is difficult for dogs to digest and thought to be the cause of a great many allergy and yeast infection problems. Brown rice and oatmeal are quality ingredients. We believe it is likely that the sum of these grains is likely to be greater than the meat products in the food.
Poultry fat is an ingredient of unidentified origin for which it is impossible to determine source or quality. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality. AAFCO define this as obtained from the tissues of poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative".
We appreciate the use of fruits and vegetables in the food, and note that it uses whole eggs.
With only one true meat product in the top five or so ingredients, and three grains, we are not confident that this food contains an adequate amount of meat product though it may contain more than some others in this class. The use of corn and fat of unidentifiable origin contribute to its rating.
