Pros: First and fourth ingredients are named meat products, uses good quality ingredients throughout.
Cons: Minimum acceptable meat content.

The first and fourth ingredients in this food are named meat products, both in meal form. There is a further meat ingredient (fish meal) 8th on the ingredient list, but this is too far down to make up a substantial portion of the food. We note that the manufacturer does not claim to use ethoxyquin-free sources (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish destined for meal, and is believed to be carcinogenic).

Rice is both the second and third ingredient – and probably actually the main ingredient in the food. See the explanation of “splitting” on the main page. Rice is a good quality grain that is low-allergenic and a good source of carbohydrates and additional protein, but we prefer dog food to contain a greater abundance of meat than grain. Oatmeal is the fifth ingredient and is also a decent quality grain.

Minor ingredients include alfalfa meal, flax seed and sunflower oil – good sources of Omega 6 and Omega 3 essential fatty acids.
