Pros: First two ingredients are named meat products, uses good quality grains and whole vegetables.
Cons: Minimum acceptable meat content, some filler.

The first ingredient in the food is a named meat product, as is the second. Since the first is chicken inclusive of its water content (about 80%) and once that is removed it is likely that this ingredient would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list (ingredients are listed in order of weight). Note that this is an example of the practice of “splitting” (see note on main page), but in this case serves to increase our level of confidence in the amount of meat product in the food. Since this is a food aimed at large breed puppies, and the presence of meat *with bone* within the top four ingredients is a factor that decreases the risk of bloat, it would be preferable that the first ingredient were not "deboned" chicken. Nonetheless, this requirement is probably covered by the second ingredient.

The next two ingredients are grains, as is the 6th. All are good quality, but the product appears excessively grain heavy. Potato is a further carbohydrate source, tomato pomace, however, is primarily filler. black malted barley is a source of sugar we prefer not to see in dog food, and is likely to contribute to yeast infections.

We appreciate the use of whole vegetables and eggs in the food. There is a good range of probiotics also. Glucosamine and Chondroitin are present, but not in any significant doses. Since there is no claim that these supplements have any role in the prevention of arthritis and joint damage, we would question the point of their inclusion in a puppy food even in significant quantity.
