The first ingredient in the food is organic chicken. Since this is chicken inclusive of water content, once this is removed as it must be to make a dry food, the ingredient will weigh around 20% of its wet weight. It is thus very unlikely that this is the true first ingredient in the food, and it is more likely that it would be more accurately placed further down the ingredient list.
The true first ingredient in the food is chicken meal (non-organic). There is a further meat meal ingredient (salmon) 9th on the ingredient list, but this is too far down for the ingredient to make a substantial contribution to the meat content of the food. We would thus judge that there is a minimum acceptable meat content in the food. We find no sign on the manufacturer website of a guarantee that they are using solely ethoxyquin-free ingredients in their food (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish ingredients, and that is believed to be carcinogenic).
The third ingredient is organic peas and the fourth soybean seeds. Soy is a lower quality source of additional protein. The use of soy is a concern for dogs prone to allergies as soy is a very common cause of allergies in dogs (some believe it is the number 1 cause of allergies, outstripping even wheat).
Organic barley and brown rice are the next ingredients, both of which are decent quality. We appreciate the inclusion of whole eggs and a range of probiotics in the food. Overall, we feel that this product is rather light in meat content (and would encourage adding meat to the diet). Ingredients overall appear to be good quality.
Note that this food uses citric acid as a preservative and thus should not be premoistened prior to feeding (a bloat risk factor for large breed dogs).
