Pros: First, second and fourth ingredients are named meat products. Uses good quality ingredients throughout.

The first, second and fourth ingredients in this food are named meat products. The first of these is meat inclusive of water content (about 80%) and once that is removed it is likely that this ingredient would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list (ingredients are listed in order of weight). However, since it is followed by two meat meal ingredients, we can have confidence in the level of meat content of the food. There is a further meat ingredient 9th on the list, but this is too far down to make up a substantive portion of the food.

The main grains are rice, barley and oatmeal. All are whole grains and good quality sources of carbohydrates and additional protein. The food contains a range of fruits and vegetables, as well as whole eggs. Tomato pomace is filler, but it is the only low quality ingredient in the food and at 10th on the ingredient list is not a major factor. Flaxseed is a good quality source of Omega 6 and Omega 3 essential fatty acids, and the food contains a range of probiotics.

Overall, this is a very good quality food with a good amount of meat and that uses high quality ingredients throughout. The food contains few fillers, no grain fragments, or other nasties that commonly cause problems for dogs.

We note that this formula has recently changed, replacing chicken meal with salmon meal in the food. As is the case with all fish meal ingredients, we look for a statement from the manufacturer about the use of ethoxyquin-free ingredients. We found no statement on the manufacturer's website.
