The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product. It is lamb, inclusive of its water content. Once this is removed, as it must be to produce a dry food, the ingredient will be left weighing around 20% of its wet weight. It is thus unlikely that this is the true first ingredient in the food and would likely be more accurately placed further down the ingredient list.
The next two ingredients are grains. Barley and oats are good quality grains, but these are the true main ingredients of the food. We believe that dog foods should be based on meat, not grains, and this food looks to be rather grain heavy.
The third and fourth ingredients are true named meat products, both in meal form. However, the second of these is fish. We do not find a statement about the use of ethoxyquin-free fish ingredients on the manufacturer website (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish destined for meal, and which is banned from use in human food due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).
We appreciate the inclusion of some vegetable matter in the food, and a good range of probiotics.
Overall, this looks to be a good quality product and it contains no low quality ingredients. A 4 star rating was considered, but in the final analysis, we could not have enough confidence that it contains adequate meat to give that rating. It would, however, be amongst the best in this class.
