INGREDIENTS

The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product, chicken meal. This is followed by brewers rice, a low quality grain and by-product. Barley, the third ingredient, is a decent quality grain.
We note chicken fat as the fourth ingredient. Research at Purdue University has identified a fat in the top four ingredients of a dry food as a factor increasing the risk of bloat in large breed dogs. Smaller breeds are untested.
Powdered cellulose is a further by-product, more commonly known as sawdust. Beet pulp is another low quality ingredient and filler. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required. Tomato pomace is further fibre/filler.
Fish meal, the 6th ingredient is a further meat ingredient in the food. It is too far down the ingredient list to make any substantive contribution to overall meat content. We find no sign on the manufacturer site of a guarantee that this ingredient is free of ethoxyquin (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish ingredients, and which is banned from use in human food due to the belief that it is carcinogenic). We appreciate the use of whole eggs rather than egg product in the food.
