The first ingredient in the food is a named meat product, in meal form. It is the sole meat ingredient in the food, and being followed by a significant number of carbohydrate sources, does not give a high level of confidence in the overall meat content of the product. We note that the meat content is fish meal, but find no sign on the manufacturer website of a guarantee that only ethoxyquin-free protein sources are used in the product (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish ingredients and which is banned or heavily regulated in human food due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).
Potato is the main carbohydrate source ahead of grains. Barley and oats are both good quality grains, though we would prefer to see greater meat content here. There are further grain products in the minor ingredients, which are grain fragments that we consider to be primarily filler. Rice gluten is the part of the rice that remains after the extraction of the larger portion of the starch, gluten, and term by the processes employed manufacture of rice products: in plain English, the remains of rice after all the nutritious bits have been removed.
Beet pulp is controversial filler which appears to be used in large quantities in this food. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.
The food contains a small amount of fruit/vegetable matter and a range of probiotics. We would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than egg product in the food. We note that this product includes synthetic vitamin K, a substance linked to liver problems and that is progressively being removed from dog food products.
Overall, this product suffers from limited meat content and the use of some low quality ingredients. As these are primarily the minor ingredients in the food, a 3* rating is still given.
