Pros:
First ingredient is a named meat product, uses primarily good quality ingredients
Cons:
Minimum acceptable meat content
The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product in meal form. This is the sole meat product in the food.
It is likely that the most significant ingredient is rice. Two forms of rice are the second and third ingredients in the food which, if not split (see explanation of splitting on the how we assess the foods page) then the combined rice products would most likely outweight the meat content as the true first ingredient in the food. Rice is a decent quality grain and good carbohydrate source, as is barley, the 5th ingredient. Rice bran is a grain fragment and primarily filler.
Avocado meal and oil are unusual ingredients as avocadoes are believed to be toxic to dogs, although the toxic dose is unknown.
Herring meal is a further meat meal ingredient, but is too far down the ingredient list to add significantly to the overall meat content of the food. It is a good source of omega 3 & 6 OFAs, supporting canola oil which, although a single source oil, is not regarded by all as high quality. The food has a good range of probiotics.
Overall, and with reserved judgement on the use of avocadoes, this product uses primarily good quality ingredients but suffers a little from limited meat content. The macronutrient breakdown is suggestive of a higher meat content than most foods with a single meat meal in the top ingredients, however, and the product just attains a 4* rating.
