Pros: First ingredient is a named meat product
Cons: Insufficient meat content, mixed quality ingredients, controversial filler

The first and sixth ingredients in this food are named meat products, both are in meal form. This does not give us a reasonable level of confidence that there is an adequate amount of meat in the product. There is a further meat meal ingredient 13th on the ingredient list. This is too far down to make any substantial contribution to the overall meat content of the food. We note it is a fish ingredient, but we find no sign on the manufacturer website of a guarantee that they use only ethoxyquin-free protein sources in the product (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish ingredients, but which is banned or heavily regulated in human food due to the belief that it is carcinogenic). The last meat related product is poultry digest, 9th on the ingredient list. Fortunately this is a minor ingredient as it is very low quality. “Digest” is material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed tissue. It is sourced from "poultry" which is unidentifiable origin for which it is impossible to determine source or quality. Unidentified ingredients are usually very low quality.

Oatmeal, barley and rice are the main grains in the food, and all are decent quality. Beet pulp is filler and a controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.

There are no fruits/vegetables in the food though we appreciate the use of whole eggs. We note that this product includes synthetic vitamin K, a substance linked to liver problems and that is progressively being removed from better quality dog food products.

Overall, this product appears a bit light in meat content, and the ingredients overall are of mixed quality.
