Pros: First, second and fifth ingredients are named meat products
Cons: Minimum acceptable meat content, some controversial filler

The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product. This is chicken inclusive of water content. Once that is removed as it must be to make a dry product, the ingredient will weight around 20% of its wet weight. It is thus unlikely that this is truely the first ingredients in the food, but would be more accurately placed further down the ingredient list. There is a further meat ingredient, this time in meal form, second on the ingredient list. It is likely that this is the true main meat ingredient in the food. There are two further meat meal ingredients, fifth and seventh on the ingredient list. These are a little too far down the ingredients listing to make a substantial contribution to the overall meat content of the food.

The main grain in the food is rice, which is a decent quality grain. Beet pulp is filler and a controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required. There are no fruits/vegetables in the food, though there is a range of probiotics. We would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than egg product in the food.

Overall, this food appears to use primarily good quality ingredients, with adequate meat content. We note the inclusion of fish meal but do not locate anywhere on the manufacturer site a statement guaranteeing the use of ethoxyquin-free protein ingredients in the food. Ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish ingredients and that is banned or heavily restricted in human food because it is believed to be carcinogenic.
