Pros:
Third and fourth ingredients are named meat products
Cons:
Inadequate meat content, low quality grains, controversial filler, chemical preservatives
The primary ingredients in this food are grains. Rice is a decent quality grain, but maize (corn) is a difficult to digest grain of limited value. It is also commonly associated with food allergies. Whatever their quality, grains are not a natural foodstuff for canines and dog food products should be based on meat, not grain.
The third ingredient in the food is a named meat product. This is not a meat meal ingredient, but is a non-dehydrated ingredient that is inclusive of water content (about 80%). Once this is removed, as it must be to create a dry product, the ingredient will weigh around 20% of its wet weight. Ingredients are listed in order of weight and it is thus unlikely that in dehydrated form this ingredient would truely be the primary ingredient in the food, but instead is a minor inclusion that would be more accurately placed much further down the ingredient list. The true primary meat ingredient may be the 4th ingredient, which is in meal form, but this far down the ingredient list gives us no confidence at all that this food contains an adequate amount of meat for a canine. A further minor meat ingredient is fish, 7th on the ingredient list. We are unable to locate any statement guaranteeing the use of ethoxyquin-free protein ingredients in the food (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative, commonly added to fish meal ingredients and that is banned or heavily regulated in human food due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).
Beet pulp is filler and a controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.
We note the inclusion of unspecified vitamins and minerals, which may contain synthetics. We further note that this product uses chemical preservative, BHA and BHT, which are banned from or heavily regulated in human food production due to the belief that they are carcinogenic.
