Cons:
Inadequate meat content, some low quality grain, sugar, fat of unidentifiable origin, undisclosed preservative
The main component of this food is carbohydrates - it has very low protein content. The main carbohydrate sources are potatoes and maize (corn). Potatoes are a decent quality carbohydrate source, but dog food products should be based on meat. Maize (corn) is a difficult to digest grain of limited value in dog food, and commonly associated with food allergy problems. Rice is a decent quality grain, but this food is extremely high in grain and other carbohydrates and lacks the meat protein required for a species-appropriate diet.
We note that beef fat is the fourth ingredient in the food, and that research at Purdue University has identified fat in the top four ingredients of dry dog food as a factor increasing the risk of bloat in large breed dogs. Smaller breeds are untested.
Bone meal is a very low quality ingredient that is unidentifiable by source or species. Molasses is an unneccessary source of sugar, likely to contribute to or exacerbate yeast and other fungal infections. "Poultry" meat, the 7th ingredient, is the sole meat source in this food. This ingredient is not one named by species. This is a concern as it makes it impossible to identify the source, quality or consistency of the ingredient. Ingredients of unidentifiable source are usually very low quality, cheap ingredients and are not found in higher quality products. We appreciate the use of whole eggs in the food.
The food contains added vitamins and minerals, but no information is given about these and it may contain synthetics. Likewise, there is no disclosure of the preservatives used in this product, which may contain chemicals such as ethoxyquin, BHA and BHT, all of which are allowed in dog food products but are banned or heavily regulated in human food due to the belief that they are carcinogenic.
Overall, this food has extremely low meat, protein and fat content and little nutritional value for the canine. Ingredient quality is mixed, with some very low quality ingredients included in the food.
