Pros: First two ingredients are named meat products
Cons: Minimum acceptable meat content, mixed quality ingredients, controversial filler

The first two ingredients in this food are both meat ingredients, in meal form. This gives us some degree of confidence that the product has a reasonable meat content, although we also note three grain ingredients ahead of the fat content, which combined may outweigh the combined meat content. Nonetheless, it is likely that this product has a reasonable amount of meat. We are unable to locate any guarantee by the manufacturer that this ingredient is free of ethoxyquin. Ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish ingredients destined for pet foods and which is banned from use in human foods because it is believed to be carcinogenic.

There are four main grain ingredients in the food, which as noted above, is quite a lot and does raise some questions of the meat content. These are of mixed quality. Corn is a difficult to digest grain of limited value in dog food, and that is commonly associated with food allergies. Wheat is believed by many to be the leading cause of food allergies in dogs. Barley is a decent quality grain, but brewers rice is a low quality ingredient and byproduct.

Beet pulp is a controversial filler. It is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.

We note the inclusion of synthetic vitamin K, a substance alleged by some to be linked to liver problems and which is progressively being removed from better quality products.

Overall, the ingredients comprising this food appear to be of mixed quality. The overall meat content is probably reasonable, but the food utilises a number of low quality ingredients with similar effects on the overall quality of the product.
