The first and fourth ingredients in this food are named meat products, in meal form. There is a further meat ingredient 12th on the ingredient list, which is far to far down to make any significant contribution to the overall meat content but is remarked because it is a fish meal. We find no sign of a guarantee on packaging or the manufacturer website that this ingredient has been purchased free of ethoxyquin (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to ocean fish products destined for meal, but that is banned or heavily regulated in human food products due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).
The main grains in the food are rice and oat groats, both of which are decent quality. Minor ingredients are more of a mixed bag. Protein content is boosted by potato protein (low quality protein compared to meat), and we would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than egg product.
Beet pulp is filler and a controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required. We note the the presence of synthetic vitamin k which is alleged by some to cause liver problems and which has been removed from better quality products.
