Pros:
First ingredient is a named meat product
Cons:
Insufficient meat content, controversial filler
The first ingredient in this food is a named meat product, in meal form. This is the single real meat ingredient in the food. There is a second meat ingredient 8th on the ingredient list, but this is too far down to make any significant contribution to the overall meat content of the food. There is also a third meat meal ingredient 10th on the ingredient list which is remarked because it is a fish meal ingredient. We can find no sign of a guarantee on packaging or the manufacturer website that this ingredient has been purchased free of ethoxyquin (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to ocean fish products destined for meal, but that is banned or heavily regulated in human food products due to the belief that it is carcinogenic).
The carbohydrate content is comes primarily from grains, which are most likely the majority content of the food as combined, these three grains almost certainly outweigh the meat listed ahead on the ingredient list. Rice, oat groats and barley are decent quality grains, but we prefer products that are less grain heavy. Potato product is a low quality ingredient, being peelings, culls and other rejects of the human food chain.
Beet pulp is filler and a controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required.
We would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than egg product in the food and note the the presence of synthetic vitamin k which is alleged by some to cause liver problems and which has been removed from better quality products. The food has a decent range of probiotics.
