This product has two named meat ingredients at the head of the ingredient list, one of which is in meal form. We note that these two are different forms of the same ingredient (see note about “splitting” on the main page). In this instance, however, that serves to increase confidence that there is a respectable amount of meat product in the food as the meat ingredients still rate above the first grain even in their split form.
The second ingredient is Brewers rice which is a low quality grain and by-product.
Brown rice is a good quality grain, but Corn is a problematic grain for dogs and is the cause of a great many allergy and yeast infection problems. Corn gluten meal is a grain fraction – the AFFCO definition of this ingredient is “the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm.” In plain English, that which remains after all the nutritious bits have been removed.
Beet pulp is another controversial ingredient – it is a by-product, being dried residue from sugar beets which has been cleaned and extracted in the process of manufacturing sugar. It is a controversial ingredient in dog food, claimed by some manufacturers to be a good source of fibre, and derided by others as an ingredient added to slow down the transition of rancid animal fats and causing stress to kidney and liver in the process. We note that beet pulp is an ingredient that commonly causes problems for dogs, including allergies and ear infections, and prefer not to see it used in dog food especially so high on the ingredient list. There are less controversial products around if additional fibre is required. We would prefer to see the use of whole eggs rather than egg product in the food.
We prefer not to see brewers yeast used in dog food, and this can contribute to yeast infections. Rice hulls is filler (the outer casing of rice). Salmon meal is a good ingredient, as are sweet potatoes and blueberries, but these occur a long way down the ingredient list and are only a very minor addition to the food.
Overall, we are reasonably happy with the amount of meat product in the food and there is more than many other foods in this class. It is the use of low quality grains and other problematic fillers that contributes to the low rating this food receives.
