Pros: First two ingredients are named meat products. Uses primarily good quality ingredients.
Cons: Minimum acceptable meat content, some filler.

The first two ingredients are named meat products. The first is lamb inclusive of its water content (about 80%) and once that is removed it is likely that this ingredient would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list (ingredients are listed in order of weight). Note that this is an example of the practice of “splitting” (see note on main page), but since it is followed by the meal form, in this case serves to increase our level of confidence in the amount of meat product in the food since the split ingredients still rank ahead of the first grain by weight. There is a further meat meal ingredient (fish) 8th on the ingredient list, but this is too far down to make up a substantial portion of the food.

We note that whilst the manufacturer has recently changed the fish products in its formulas, we are unable to locate a guarantee on their website that the ingredients are free of ethoxyquin. Ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish products and which is banned or heavily regulated in human food production due to the belief that it is carcinogenic.

The primary grains in the food are millet, rice and barley. Millet is a good quality grain, easily digested and non-allergenic. Rice is also a good quality grain and source of carbohydrates, protein and fibre. Barley and oatmeal are further good quality grains, but rice bran is a grain fragment and filler. Canola oil is a good source of linoleic acid.
