The first ingredient in the food is a named meat product, as is the fourth. Since the first is fish inclusive of its water content (about 80%), once that is removed it is likely that this ingredient would be more accurately placed somewhat further down the ingredient list (ingredients are listed in order of weight). The food uses fish as its primary meat ingredient and we note that the manufacturer does not claim to use ethoxyquin-free sources (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish destined for meal, and is believed to be carcinogenic).
The second and third ingredients are grains, as is the fifth. All are good quality, but present in amounts that suggest a very grain heavy product. Potatoes are a further carbohydrate source, tomato pomace, however, is primarily filler. Black malted barley is a source of sugar we prefer not to see in dog food, and is likely to contribute to yeast infections.
We appreciate the use of whole vegetables in the food. There is a good range of probiotics also. Glucosamine and Chondroitin are present, but not in any significant doses. Despite the product title, there is precious little sweet potato in the food either.
