The first two ingredients in the food are named meat products. The first is chicken inclusive of its water content, and once this is removed - as it must be to make a dry food - the ingredient will end up weighing around 20% of its original weight. It is thus likely to be more accurately placed much further down the ingredient list. Since it is followed immediately by a named meat meal, however, our confidence in the amount of meat in the food is not affected.
There is a further meat meal ingredient 7th on the ingredient list, but this is too far down to make a substantive contribution to the meat content of the food. This ingredient is fish meal and we note that the manufacturer makes no claim about the use of ethoxyquin-free ingredients in the food (ethoxyquin is a chemical preservative commonly added to fish meals, and is banned from use in human foods because it is believed to be carcinogenic).
The third ingredient in the food is rice. This is followed by the fat content in fourth. We note that fat in the top four ingredients of a dry food has been identified as a factor increasing the risk of bloat in large breed dogs. Smaller breeds are untested.
We appreciate the range of probiotics in the food.
